A Hidden World

No New Posts Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley is a twisted cobbled street located at (or at least accessed on foot from) the center of London, and acts as the main shopping center of wizarding Britain. When shopping for those particularly tricky items, Diagon Alley is the only place to go.

No New Posts Knockturn Alley

This is a dingy street that runs off Diagon Alley and is home to an altogether less salubrious class of wizarding shops. In addition to the shops themselves, there are also a number of shabby street-traders. The street twists and turns, with the shops crowding around it so tightly that they seem to block out the sun. It is, however, only a short distance to the relative safety of Diagon Alley.

No New Posts The Ministry of Magic

The Ministry of Magic is located somewhere just below the surface of downtown London. To get to the Ministry, one must head for an old, shabby telephone booth down in a small graffiti filled alleyway. Once inside, pick up the receiver and dial 6 - 2 - 4 - 4 - 2. When you have been approved. Then the telephone booth begins to descend like an elevator, finally arriving in a magnificent mahogany-panelled entrance hall with a highly polished, dark wood floor. As a visitor one is to submit to a search and present one's wand for registration at the security desk, which is at the far end of the Atrium.

No New Posts St. Mungos

St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is the wizarding hospital located in the heart of Muggle London, England. Patients go to St. Mungo's for a wide variety of reasons, ranging from common illnesses like dragon pox to more complicated ailments like spell damage and werewolf bites. Like all aspects of the wizarding world, St. Mungo's is hidden in plain site, disguised as a dilapidated, red-brick department store that Muggles see but largely ignore. Wizards or witches who are unable to reach St. Mungo's by magical transportation can enter through Purge and Dowse, Ltd. To Muggles, Purge and Dowse, Ltd. is nothing more than a rundown, old-fashioned department store that is always closed for refurbishment. The "store" boasts a window display containing a few chipped dummies. By leaning in and talking to one of the unsightly dummies, patients and visitors can gain access to the hospital, stepping directly through the magical store front and into St. Mungo's reception area.

No New Posts Grimmauld Place

Grimmauld Place, London, a twenty minutes' walk from the King's Cross railway station. The street has a small square nearby. It's not an idyllic area of the city; the neighboring houses are in disrepair and their inhabitants play loud music and leave their rubbish to rot.

No New Posts Spinner's End

Up the steep riverbank, a series of rusted old railings separated the dirty river from a narrow, cobblestone street. On the opposite side of this street stood row upon row of dilapidated brick houses. These row homes all looked alike, their windows bleak with no sign of life stirring within. An alley in between the houses lead from the street bordered by the river to an almost identical street, lined with even more ramshackle row homes. This street showed even greater signs of neglect, as some of the streetlamps were broken, causing the street to be alternately shrouded in darkness and bathed in artificial light. Through this seemingly unending labyrinth of cobblestone streets and similar-looking brick houses in various states of shabby disrepair, is a street named Spinner’s End. It was over Spinner’s End that the ominous chimney stood, bearing down on the houses below. Many of the houses in this part of the city appeared deserted, their windows either broken or boarded up. The very last house on Spinner’s End was not abandoned, though. On the contrary, dim lights could be seen glittering through the curtains in the downstairs room of this home, announcing the presence of life.

No New Posts Platform Nine and Three Quarters

This platform is not visible to Muggles, being, as are all large meeting places for wizards, magically concealed. In order to get to Platform Nine and Three Quarters, one must walk directly through the seemingly-solid barrier between Platform Nine and Platform Ten. Once through, the barrier it is no longer visible, a wrought-iron sign reading "Platform Nine and Three Quarters" having taken its place.

No New Posts The Boar's Gate

The Gate to the grounds of Hogwarts. Two massive boar statues flank either side of a tall metal gate. Though no chain or lock binds them shut, no ones been able to open them in around 50 years. A wall of multi-colored light lies just this side of them, stopping approach. The grounds are a hazy vision through the ward barrier.

No New Posts The Three Broomsticks

A more popular inn than the Hog's Head, the Three Broomsticks sits on the High Street. It is often warm, crowded, and a bit smoky—but clean and welcoming. A mirror behind the bar reflects the cosy atmosphere, and drinks are served in glasses and in pewter tankards.

No New Posts Honeydukes

Honeydukes is lined with shelves of all kinds of sweets. Here one finds the traditional toffees and coconut ices, nougats and chocolates and fudge, and also magical sweets. Examples of these are, of course, Bertie Botts' Every Flavour Beans, Jelly Slugs, acid pops, and Fizzing Whizbees. Their range of "Special Effects" sweets includes quills made of sugar; Toothflossing Stringmints; Droobles Best Blowing Gum, the indigo bubbles of which linger for days; toad-shaped peppermint creams that leap in one's belly; exploding bonbons; Ice Mice to make one's teeth chatter; Pepper Imps to make one exhale smoke and flames; and sherbet balls that make one levitate. The shop caters to "Unusual Tastes" in one corner, boasting items such as cockroach clusters, and blood-flavoured lollipops for vampires.

No New Posts Post Office

The Hogsmeade Post Office boasts at least three-hundred owls perched on shelves. Various breeds and sizes are available, depending on the speed needed for delivery, and they wear color-coded bands accordingly. The smallest are the palm-sized Scops, and the biggest the Post Office boasts are the Great Greys.

No New Posts Shrieking Shack

The most haunted place in Britain! Situated somewhat uphill from central Hogsmeade, the ruined house is avoided by the villagers, Hogwarts ghosts. If anyone were to get inside, they would be surprised at what they saw: stains everywhere, bite marks on furniture, other pieces of furniture shattered. The interior of the Shack bears evidence to a much more physical haunting than any ghosts are capable of, although it also shows signs of disuse--peeling wallpaper and a blanket of dust over everything.

No New Posts Madam Puddifoot's

This tea shop is popular with young couples on Hogsmeade weekends. A small shop located on a side street, it tends to be a bit stuffy inside due to the crowds. The windows steam up and the gaudy tables and chairs are all claimed by teenagers holding hands or kissing over cups of tea and coffee. A bell over the door announces customers; the round tables are decorated with lacy napkins and china sugar bowls.

No New Posts Hog's Head

The Hog's Head sits at the end of a side street, marked by a sign depicting a boar's head dripping blood onto a white cloth. When the wind blows, the sign squeaks on its rusted bracket. The inn has only one room for the bar. Dirt is packed over the stone floor and hardly any sunshine filters through the filthy bay windows. The room is dimly lit by candle stumps on each wooden table. A goaty odor permeates the whole place. As the glasses and bottles are very dirty, and "cleaned" with very dirty rags, some patrons will bring their own beverage receptacles.

No New Posts Hogsmeade Commons

Though the small village is settled mostly between thick ranges of mountains as added protection from muggle eyes, there are of course some amount of countryside and forest spreading away from it, and the space occupied by Hogwarts. Here a few manors exist, and other properties comprised of large expanses of forest and field.

No New Posts Beauxbatons Academy

The Academy is in a glittering palace, probably newer and brighter than the medieval Hogwarts Castle; there's no armour in the halls. The food is, apparently, delicious but much lighter than the food served at Hogwarts. Students are serenaded while they dine by choirs of wood nymphs. Beauxbatons is Unplottable, so no Muggles or even wizards from rival schools can find it on a map, and it is like disguised so no one can really see it unless they know to look for it. The Academy has existed for over seven hundred years.

No New Posts Durmstrang Institute

Durmstrang was founded over seven hundred years ago. In the centuries since, it has developed a reputation for an intolerance of Muggle-borns and an emphasis on the Dark Arts. It is Unplottable and hidden from Muggles and wizards from rival institutions, but Durmstrang is thought to be in Northeastern Europe. The Durmstrang castle has only four floors and is generally cool and dark. The fires are only lit when needed for magic, so students wear warm uniforms: deep red robes covered by thick fur capes.

No New Posts Azkaban Fortress

Azkaban is the horrible wizard’s prison where witches and wizards are incarcerated for their crimes. Located on a tiny island in the freezing waters of the North Sea, Azkaban is not like Muggle prisons that rely on iron bars and heavy security to keep their prisoners in line. After the Dementors defected to Voldemort during his Second Rise the Ministry decided to hand over Azkaban's security to the Goblins.
