Spinner's End
Up the steep riverbank, a series of rusted old railings separated the dirty river from a narrow, cobblestone street. On the opposite side of this street stood row upon row of dilapidated brick houses. These row homes all looked alike, their windows bleak with no sign of life stirring within. An alley in between the houses lead from the street bordered by the river to an almost identical street, lined with even more ramshackle row homes. This street showed even greater signs of neglect, as some of the streetlamps were broken, causing the street to be alternately shrouded in darkness and bathed in artificial light. Through this seemingly unending labyrinth of cobblestone streets and similar-looking brick houses in various states of shabby disrepair, is a street named Spinner’s End. It was over Spinner’s End that the ominous chimney stood, bearing down on the houses below. Many of the houses in this part of the city appeared deserted, their windows either broken or boarded up. The very last house on Spinner’s End was not abandoned, though. On the contrary, dim lights could be seen glittering through the curtains in the downstairs room of this home, announcing the presence of life.
